…Total payment made now stands at almost N80bn from total inherited backlog of N111bn

Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has approved the release of an additional N2.3 billion for the settlement of outstanding gratuities, reinforcing his administration’s ongoing effort to reduce long standing obligations to retirees.
AkwaIbomTimes learnt that the latest disbursement brings the total amount paid so far to nearly N80 billion since the governor assumed office on 29 May 2023. The state inherited an estimated backlog of N111 billion in unpaid gratuities and related entitlements accumulated from 2012.
Government sources said the new release aligns with commitments restated by the governor during the presentation of the 2026 budget, where he reaffirmed that clearing the backlog of gratuities would remain a fiscal priority. Officials noted that regular releases have become a consistent feature of the administration’s financial planning.
Beyond gratuity payments, the administration has linked the policy to a broader social investment agenda. Since taking office, the government has delivered 335 housing units under the ARISE Compassionate Homes programme, with a stated target of 500 units within the first term.
In addition, fifty senior citizens receive a monthly stipend of N50,000 on a rotating basis across the state’s wards through the ARISE Elderly Care Initiative. More than 10,000 vulnerable residents have also been enrolled at no cost under the ARISE Medical Insurance Scheme, according to official figures.
These interventions are being pursued alongside capital projects in sectors including tourism, aviation, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and power, as the government seeks to balance social welfare with economic development in Akwa Ibom.
The announcement was issued on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ekerete Udoh.
