Nine senators from three political parties have formally notified the Senate of their defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Senators Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye and Ireti Kingibe left the Labour Party for the ADC.
Five others, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Binos Yaroe, Lawal Adamu Usman, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo and Augustine Akobundu, also moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ADC.
Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Senate’s only member elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, also defected to the ADC.
However, the Senate gave Abaribe one week to reconsider his decision. Lawmakers said his explanation, that he left APGA because the party removed him, does not meet the constitutional grounds recognised for defection.
