The Independent National Electoral Commission has said the dates announced for the 2027 general elections were fixed strictly within existing legal and regulatory provisions, even as it acknowledged growing concerns from political and civic stakeholders.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the commission explained that the election timetable was drawn up in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, the Electoral Act 2022, and its own regulations and guidelines governing elections.

According to the commission, its regulations adopted since 2019 clearly prescribe when elections must be held in a general election year. These rules stipulate that presidential and National Assembly elections take place on the third Saturday of February, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections follow two weeks later.
Based on this framework, the commission fixed 20 February 2027 for the presidential and National Assembly polls and 6 March 2027 for governorship and state assembly elections.
INEC, however, noted that stakeholders have raised objections over the overlap between the scheduled dates and some nationally recognised holidays and observances. It said these concerns relate to voter participation and the smooth conduct of the polls.
The commission said it is engaging in consultations on the matter and may seek legislative intervention if adjustments become necessary, provided any changes remain within constitutional and statutory limits.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusion, and credible elections, adding that the public would be informed should any revisions be made.
The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, and dated 13 February 2026.
