The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission has cautioned Nigerians against expecting a flawless general election in 2027, even as the commission works to strengthen its systems and processes.

Speaking on preparations for the next nationwide vote, the commission acknowledged that while reforms and technological upgrades are underway, challenges remain. The electoral body said it has improved its capacity for electronic transmission of results and is refining operational procedures based on lessons from previous elections.
The chairman stressed that elections anywhere in the world are complex exercises that involve logistics, human coordination and infrastructure. He noted that issues such as difficult terrain, network limitations and last minute operational pressures can affect performance in certain locations.
INEC maintained that its goal is continuous improvement rather than the pursuit of absolute perfection. Officials said the commission is reviewing its internal regulations and guidelines for political parties to reduce disputes and strengthen compliance with electoral laws ahead of 2027.
The commission also pledged to intensify voter education and stakeholder engagement. According to the chairman, public confidence depends not only on technology but also on transparency, training of personnel and cooperation from political actors.
With more than a year before the next general election cycle gathers momentum, INEC said it remains focused on building a more credible and efficient process, while urging citizens to understand the scale and complexity of conducting elections in a country as large and diverse as Nigeria.
