Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said on Thursday that Israeli forces had killed Alireza Tangsiri, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy, in an overnight strike reportedly carried out in Bandar Abbas.
Katz said Tangsiri was responsible for actions linked to the disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. Israeli media reports, citing officials, said other senior naval officers were also targeted in the operation.
Iran had not publicly confirmed Tangsiri’s death at the time this report was filed. Early international reports said Tehran had not immediately acknowledged the claim, leaving the account without independent confirmation from Iranian authorities.
The reported strike marks a further escalation in hostilities involving Israel and Iran, with fresh concern over security in the Gulf and the stability of global energy supplies.
Tangsiri had led the IRGC navy since 2018 and was widely seen as one of Iran’s most prominent naval commanders. The force has long played a central role in Iran’s military posture around the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
