Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in a major political development that could reshape the balance of power in the state.
The Zamfara State Government said the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, political leaders, elders and supporters across the state. It said the move was taken in the interest of stability, progress and the sustainable development of Zamfara.
According to the government, the defection was driven by prolonged internal crisis, leadership disagreements and unresolved structural challenges within the PDP at both the national and state levels. It said those issues had created uncertainty and distractions that could affect governance and service delivery.
Governor Lawal said his priority remains the peace, security and development of Zamfara State. He added that joining the APC would provide greater unity, stability and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government for the benefit of the people.
The final deliberation on the move was said to have taken place at the Government House in Gusau, under the coordination of the Deputy Governor, alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.
The governor also thanked members and supporters of the PDP for their support over the years, but said present political realities made the decision necessary.
The state government called on citizens, political leaders, party supporters and other stakeholders to remain calm, peaceful and supportive as Zamfara enters a new political phase.
