… Ibom Air as a driving force behind Akwa Ibom’s global reach
By Destiny Young
The recent approval granted to Victor Attah International Airport for international flight operations marks a major milestone in the economic journey of Akwa Ibom State. This development has the potential to transform the state into a significant hub for travel, business, and tourism in Nigeria and the wider Gulf of Guinea region.

In the next few months, we are going to work with other relevant agencies of Government (eg Customs, Immigration, NDLEA, Quarantine, Police, etc) to put in place all necessary details for the international flights to begin operations from the VICTOR ATTAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, UYO.” – Fetus Keyamo
For years, Akwa Ibom has invested steadily in aviation infrastructure. The state established Ibom Air, one of the most reputable airlines in the country. It upgraded the airport terminal to international standards and continues to invest in safety and operational facilities. With approval now secured, the state finally stands ready to welcome travellers from across the world.
International connectivity will serve as a powerful catalyst for tourism. Akwa Ibom is blessed with attractive beaches, cultural festivals, and a vibrant culinary scene. Many of these assets have remained underexplored because global travellers have not had direct access to the state. Easy access means tourists can now fly into Uyo without going through multiple flight connections. More visitors will discover the rich culture of the Akwa Ibom people, explore destinations like Ibeno Beach, and enjoy hospitality services that are already gaining national recognition.
The hospitality industry is expected to witness significant expansion. Hotels, tour operators, event planners, and transport businesses will benefit from increased demand. New resorts and leisure investments are likely to emerge around coastal areas and attraction sites. This will create jobs for young people and support local entrepreneurs.
The revenue advantages are equally promising. Government will see growth in taxes and service payments from increased aviation activities and tourism spending. The business community will enjoy improved opportunities as international investors visit the state for trade, real estate development, and industrial collaboration. With the presence of the promising Ibom Deep Sea Port project, global air connectivity strengthens Akwa Ibom’s case as a future integrated logistics centre.
Furthermore, foreign exchange earnings will rise as the state welcomes more international visitors. Local artisans and creative professionals will gain visibility and new markets for their work. These financial inflows will not only support economic diversification but also help reduce unemployment and poverty.
This achievement places responsibility on the government and private sector to sustain progress. Security must remain strong. Attraction sites should be developed to world class standards. Tourism marketing efforts must target regional and global audiences. Workers in hospitality and aviation support services need continuous training to ensure quality experiences for visitors.
Opening the skies signals more than an expansion of flight routes. It reflects a vision of growth built on innovation, confidence, and strategic planning. Akwa Ibom now has an opportunity to rise as a preferred tourism destination and a thriving centre of international commerce.
With commitment and partnership across sectors, the state can fully convert this milestone into lasting prosperity for its people.
