Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in a development that could deepen the party’s internal troubles ahead of the 2027 political cycle.

A letter dated 11 March 2026 showed that the former governor of Sokoto State informed his ward chairman in Tambuwal Local Government Area that his resignation takes immediate effect. In the letter, he blamed persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements and divisions within the party.

Tambuwal said the conflicts within the PDP had made it increasingly difficult for him to continue his active participation and commitment as a member. He added that the crisis had weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.
His exit is significant because Tambuwal remains one of the most prominent political figures from northern Nigeria. He currently represents Sokoto South Senatorial District in the Senate. Before returning to the National Assembly, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015 and later as governor of Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023.
Over the years, Tambuwal has played a visible role in opposition politics and national political realignments. His influence within the PDP, especially in the North West, has made him a key figure in the party’s internal power structure.
His resignation is expected to raise fresh questions about the stability of the PDP and the shape of opposition politics in Sokoto State and beyond. Attention will now turn to the political direction he may take as preparations for 2027 gather pace.
