President Bola Tinubu has accused opposition parties of criticising the Electoral Act for political advantage, describing such attacks as a disservice to Nigerians. He spoke on Friday at the 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abuja.

Tinubu said the Electoral Act went through rigorous legislative scrutiny before it was passed, including public hearings and parliamentary consideration in line with constitutional procedure. He said the law should not be reduced to partisan talking points.
According to the President, the reforms form part of efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law and guarantee credible elections. He also said his administration would continue to protect electoral integrity and the sanctity of the ballot.
The remarks came as Tinubu used the convention to defend his administration’s democratic credentials and reject suggestions that the APC is working towards a one-party state. He said democracy thrives on healthy competition and credible opposition.
His comments add to the growing political debate around the Electoral Act 2026, which has drawn criticism from opposition figures since it was signed into law. At the convention, however, Tinubu maintained that the legislation was designed to improve the electoral process, not weaken it.
