U.S. forces have destroyed 16 Iranian mine laying vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, according to American officials, in a major escalation of the conflict and a move that has heightened concern over global shipping and oil supplies.
The reported strike took place on Tuesday, March 10, as Washington said the vessels posed a threat to commercial traffic in the strategic waterway, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
The development has added to fears of wider disruption in the Gulf, with shipping activity already under pressure and energy markets reacting to the rising security risk.
However, while the U.S. says the vessels were targeted to prevent mining operations, independent confirmation of the full extent of the alleged Iranian activity remains limited.
The incident marks another sharp turn in the growing confrontation, with the Strait of Hormuz now emerging as a critical front in the crisis.
