A federal lawmaker from Akwa Ibom State, Rt Hon Unyime Idems, has announced the sponsorship of four indigenes for postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom, under a fully funded scholarship scheme aimed at skills development and long term state growth.
The lawmaker said the beneficiaries form the second batch of candidates supported through his overseas education programme, which he described as part of a wider commitment to build human capital and promote self sufficiency in Akwa Ibom State. He noted that the initiative targets young professionals who are expected to return with advanced knowledge and contribute to public and private sector development.

The beneficiaries are James Gideon Ebong, admitted to Heriot Watt University, Emem Michael Abai of University of Portsmouth, Ikponoabasi Imo Ukpeh of University of East London, and Blessing Nse Esitikot of University of Exeter.
Speaking at a brief send off ceremony at his office in the National Assembly complex in Abuja, Idems said all major costs had been covered, including tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and return travel. He added that the scholars also received additional financial support to ease their transition into academic life in the United Kingdom.
He urged the students to approach their studies with discipline and a strong sense of responsibility, describing them as representatives of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria. According to him, the programme permits part time employment, which he said could further enhance their exposure and practical experience if used wisely.
The lawmaker also encouraged the beneficiaries to view the opportunity as preparation for service, stressing that they were expected to return home after their studies to share knowledge and help train others as part of a broader development strategy.
In their response, the scholars expressed appreciation for the support, describing the scholarship as transformative. They pledged to excel academically and to uphold the image of their state and country. The beneficiaries have since commenced their studies in the United Kingdom.
