The West African Examinations Council, West African Examinations Council, has introduced a digital certificate service for candidates in Nigeria and four other member countries.
The council said the new platform allows holders of its certificates to access, share and verify their academic records electronically. The service is now operational in Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
According to WAEC, the digital system enables users to retrieve examination numbers, confirm certificate authenticity and send certified records directly to institutions and employers. The council stated that the platform is designed to reduce delays, cut administrative hurdles and address challenges linked to lost or damaged certificates.
WAEC explained that the initiative followed a pilot phase in Nigeria which recorded positive feedback from candidates and educational institutions. It added that the digital certificates are secure and cost effective, while meeting international verification standards.
The examination body clarified that the introduction of the digital service does not replace the issuance of physical certificates. Printed certificates will continue to be available for candidates who require them.
The digital certificate service is accessible through mobile and web applications, with WAEC encouraging stakeholders to adopt the platform to improve efficiency in academic record management.
