A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has re-elected Abdulrahman Mohammed as national chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as national secretary at its elective national convention in Abuja. The two officials emerged through a consensus arrangement at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Sunday.
The convention took place against the backdrop of a prolonged internal crisis within the PDP, with competing blocs still laying claim to the party’s leadership structure. Recent reports said reconciliation efforts had resumed between the Wike-backed camp and another faction associated with Tanimu Turaki ahead of the Abuja gathering.
Before the convention, Mohammed and Anyanwu had been serving under the Wike-backed caretaker structure that oversaw preparations for the event. Reports earlier in the week said the faction had already commenced the sale of nomination forms and reaffirmed zoning arrangements for elective positions ahead of the convention.
Coverage of the convention also showed that delegates arrived from across the states and the Federal Capital Territory for the exercise, while Wike and other party figures were present as the faction moved ahead with the event despite the unresolved dispute within the opposition party.
The latest outcome is expected to intensify attention on the PDP’s struggle for internal cohesion as the party seeks to manage parallel claims to legitimacy ahead of the 2027 political cycle. That assessment is an inference drawn from the continuing legal and political contest between rival party camps.
