The Akwa Ibom State Government has approved the construction of solar‑powered water facilities in all 369 wards across the state to improve access to clean and affordable water.
The Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. Ubuo Ubuo Ph.D., announced this on Thursday, 12 March 2026, when he received the newly inaugurated executives of the Borehole Drillers Association of Nigeria (BODAN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, in his office.
Dr. Ubuo said the initiative aligns with the state’s ARISE Agenda and reflects government’s commitment to strengthening water supply infrastructure across urban and rural communities. He added that efforts are ongoing to restore water supply to urban areas.
He emphasised that only certified members of BODAN would be engaged in borehole drilling and other water projects to ensure quality service delivery and adherence to standards. The Commissioner urged the association to maintain professionalism, uphold operational standards, and collaborate with the Ministry to deliver sustainable water solutions statewide.
BODAN State Chairman, Elder Eno Ekwere, commended Governor Umo Eno Ph.D. for prioritising potable water access. He explained that the association, established in 1990, is a professional body committed to supporting government policy on safe water supply through sensitisation, capacity building, and community mobilisation.
Elder Ekwere noted that BODAN had voluntarily rehabilitated several water facilities across the state and expressed readiness to partner with the government on future projects. He also announced plans to mark the 2026 United Nations World Water Day, themed “Water and Gender,” with a thanksgiving service at Hilltop Church, Abak Road, Uyo, on 22 March.
In his remarks, the Director of Water Resources, Mr. Gideon Akpan, commended the association’s initiative and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working with BODAN for sustainable water development across Akwa Ibom State.
