… tasks LG chairmen on upgrade of rural infrastructure, as corps member receives State honour
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting autonomy to local governments, saying the gesture has increased the development of rural infrastructure and improved the living conditions of rural dwellers.
The Governor made the commendation when he received a delegation from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) led by the State Coordinator, Mrs Ngozi Akuagbaogu, along with a Corps member, Odinakachi Kelechi, who distinguished himself in Community Development Service (CDS)
Governor Eno said he heard of the corps member’s CDS achievement , especially the renovation of a classroom in his Place of Primary Assignment in Okobo Local Government Area, and decided to encourage him for showing leadership, and to encourage other young people to emulate him.
He assured that Government will support the full renovation of the School, and urged the Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Hon. George Henshaw, to initiate the process.
The Governor emphasized that autonomy has made local government councils to have more funds for execution of projects and called on the chairmen of the state’s 31 LGAs to partner with his administration for accelerated rural infrastructure development.
He noted that though LG Chairmen were doing well in their respective areas, there was need to collaborate with the State Government to do more for the good of the people.
The State Chief Executive said his administration has built model schools and model Primary Health Centers which serve as templates for local government areas willing to have a healthy collaboration with the State Government.
He congratulated Kelechi for his sacrifice which has earned him both the State honours, and nomination for the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 Presidential Honours Award.
Governor Eno also assured that government will continue to support the NYSC in the State, especially by ensuring that corps members have a conducive orientation camp.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Akuagbaogu, appreciated the Governor for his continuous support for corps members in the State as well as indigenous corps members serving across the country.
“I wish to express my profound gratitude for the upward review of the monthly State Allowance for Corps members from N5, 000 to N20, 000 and for the consistency in its payment. The gesture has significantly boosted the morale and welfare of corps members serving in the State,” she said.
Presenting the distinguished Corps member, Kelechi, she enumerated some of his achievements to include; complete renovation of a class room, donation of ten three – seater desks, organisation of sensitisation campaign to students on the dangers of cultism, and organisation of free extra – mural lessons for JSS 3 and SSS3 students in preparation for external examinations.
High point of the visit was the presentation of the NYSC State Honours Award certificate to the corps member.
At the meeting were the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakeneyi, Coordinator Office of the First Lady, Lady Helen Eno – Obareki, Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, Executive Assistant/Chief Delivery Advisor Mr Aniefiok Johnson, members of the State Executive Council, and other government officials.
