Nigeria has launched FreeTV nationwide, marking a major step in the country’s long-delayed digital television transition.

Nigeria has launched FreeTV nationwide offering free digital television access through its Digital Switch Over programme

The rollout, announced on June 17, 2026, is part of the Federal Government’s Digital Switch Over programme, designed to move Nigeria away from analogue broadcasting and expand access to free-to-air television services across the country.

FreeTV is expected to give households access to a broader range of channels, including news, sports, education, and children’s programming, while improving picture and sound quality. The platform is also aimed at making television content more accessible to viewers who may have previously depended on analogue signals.

Officials say the launch represents a significant milestone for Nigeria’s broadcast industry after years of postponements. It is also expected to reshape how Nigerians receive television content, especially as the country pushes toward a more modern digital media environment.
