Governor Eno Reaffirms Commitment to Improved Healthcare in Akwa Ibom
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has restated his administration’s dedication to providing quality healthcare for citizens through collaboration with global partners, including Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation.
Governor Eno gave this assurance on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, when he received a delegation from Rotary International, led by the Trustee Chairman of the Rotary Foundation, Mr Holger Knaack, during a courtesy visit to Government House, Uyo.
The Governor, who is a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club, described the partnership as a timely support in line with his administration’s ARISE Agenda. He thanked the Rotary Foundation for selecting Akwa Ibom as a pilot state for the Rotary Healthy Communities Challenge, noting that the initiative complements the state’s healthcare programmes which prioritise child survival and maternal health.
Governor Eno highlighted the government’s efforts to construct and rehabilitate primary healthcare centres across all 31 local government areas, ensuring access to affordable and efficient medical services. He further disclosed that the state had awarded its largest ever health-related contract for the construction of an International Medical Centre, which he said would promote medical tourism and position Akwa Ibom as a leading destination for advanced healthcare.
Speaking earlier, the Country Lead of the Rotary Healthy Communities Challenge, Mr Dele Balogun, said the initiative was designed to support the state’s efforts in reducing child mortality from preventable diseases such as diarrhoea, pneumonia, and malaria. He explained that Rotary had trained volunteers to conduct community sensitisation and offer free tests and treatment for common childhood illnesses.
Mr Balogun added that Akwa Ibom was selected for the project by the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, with sponsorship from the Rotary Foundation.
Also speaking, the Trustee Chairman of the Rotary Foundation, Mr Holger Knaack, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to Nigeria’s health sector and its continued fight against polio.
A highlight of the visit was the decoration of Governor Eno with the prestigious Rotary pin by Mr Knaack. The Rotary team later visited the ARISE Palm Resort, where they commended the Governor’s visionary leadership and contribution to tourism development in the state.
