The South South Development Commission has presented its 2026 budget proposal to the National Assembly, outlining plans for a results-oriented approach to regional growth and accountability.

During the session held before the Senate and House Committees on SSDC on Tuesday, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ms Usoro Akpabio, said the proposal demonstrates the Commission’s transition from establishing institutional foundations to executing measurable programmes that directly impact communities across the South South.

She told federal lawmakers that the region’s development must reflect its substantial contribution to Nigeria’s economic strength. According to her, ensuring that the South South benefits proportionally from the wealth it generates is essential for the country’s long-term stability and inclusive growth.
“The South South must not only contribute to the national purse but also witness progress that matches its economic importance,” Ms Akpabio said, noting that genuine development in the oil-rich region would strengthen the nation’s overall sustainability.
The presentation was chaired at the Senate by Senator Benson Konbowei, who leads the Senate Committee on SSDC, while the House session was received by Honourable Julius Pondi, Chairman of the corresponding House Committee.
