Fresh uncertainty has emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party, following reports that Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde may soon leave the party.

According to the report, both governors are weighing different political options as the internal crisis within the PDP continues to deepen ahead of the 2027 general election.
Governor Mohammed is reportedly considering a move to the All Progressives Congress, while Governor Makinde is said to be planning a switch to the African Democratic Congress. The report cited unnamed sources familiar with developments within the opposition party.
The latest claims add to growing concerns over the PDP’s stability, as the party has continued to battle a prolonged leadership struggle and an increasing wave of defections.
The report further stated that several governors elected on the PDP platform have already left the party since the 2023 general election. Those named include Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, and Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, all of whom were said to have moved to the APC at different times. Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke was also listed in the report as having left for the Accord Party.
In Zamfara State, Governor Dauda Lawal was also mentioned as another PDP figure who may be preparing to leave the party.
Beyond the governors, the report said the defections have also affected the National Assembly. It claimed that dozens of federal lawmakers elected on the PDP platform have crossed over to the APC since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in June 2023.
Political observers believe the pressure to finalise party switches may increase in the coming weeks, especially after the Independent National Electoral Commission released its timetable for the 2027 elections.
Under the schedule referenced in the report, presidential and National Assembly elections are to hold on January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly polls are fixed for February 6, 2027.
The reported moves by Mohammed and Makinde, if confirmed, would mark another major blow to the PDP as it struggles to retain influence as Nigeria’s main opposition force.
