The Nigeria Data Protection Commission has launched the Meta Supported Initiatives for Data Protection, a strategic programme aimed at strengthening data protection safeguards for Nigerians.

The initiative, known as M-SIDP, is being implemented in collaboration with Meta Platforms, Inc. It follows investigations into the company’s data processing practices in Nigeria.
According to a press release issued by the Commission on June 8, 2026, the matter was concluded in 2025 through a court-approved settlement. As part of the settlement, Meta committed to supporting a two-year programme of public-facing data protection measures.
The Commission said the initiative aligns with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, the NDPA General Application and Implementation Directive, and the NDPC Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan 2023-2027.
The M-SIDP programme will focus on four strategic areas. These include governance, research and development, ecosystem sustainability and safety mechanisms, capacity development for data protection officers and data protection compliance organisations, and public awareness targeting data subjects with strong interest in vulnerable groups.
The Commission said the settlement does not affect its statutory powers to regulate data processing activities in Nigeria. It added that it would continue to exercise its mandate in accordance with the law and other applicable regulations.
NDPC also assured stakeholders that it would provide periodic updates on the implementation of the programme.
“The Commission will consistently provide periodic updates on the implementation of the M-SIDP programme and calls on all stakeholders to support this initiative in advancing a secure and accountable privacy ecosystem in Nigeria,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by Itunu Dosekun, Chief Data Protection Officer and Head, Media Unit, NDPC.
