PROFILE OF SENATOR ITA S. J. ENANG, LLD, OFR

BREAKING: President Tinubu Appoints Sen. Enang as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Senator Ita Solomon Enang, OFR NPOM, as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Federal Republic of Germany. The appointment marks a fresh diplomatic role for the veteran lawmaker and former Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs. Senator Enang, who was previously inducted as Nigeria’s envoy will now assume official duties at the Nigerian Embassy in Berlin in the coming weeks. President Tinubu’s appointment of Senator Enang comes as Nigeria deepens economic and technical cooperation with Germany, Europe’s largest economy and one of Nigeria’s top trading partners within the European Union. The two countries have sustained strong collaboration in renewable energy, vocational training, manufacturing, and development cooperation, particularly through the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). At 63, Senator Enang brings decades of public service experience to the role. He served three terms in the House of Representatives before representing Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly. Between 2020 and 2023, he served as SSA to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, acting as a key liaison between the Presidency and stakeholders in the region. As Nigeria’s highest-ranking diplomatic representative in Germany, his mandate will include advancing bilateral relations, promoting trade and investment, safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians in Germany, and strengthening cooperation in education, technology, and climate policy. Nigeria and Germany have maintained cordial diplomatic relations since 1960, with Berlin supporting several development projects in Nigeria through technical assistance and grants. In recent years, both countries have expanded collaboration into Germany’s dual vocational training model, migration management, and the renewable energy transition — areas central to President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda. Analysts say Senator Enang’s political background and legislative expertise position him well for high-level engagements with the German Bundestag and federal ministries, particularly in mobilizing investment and support for Nigeria’s economic and energy transition goals. The ambassador is expected to present his letters of credence to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier upon arrival in Berlin before formally commencing diplomatic functions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not announced a specific resumption date. The appointment forms part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation and advance the country’s foreign policy objectives across key global capitals.
