The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has commenced operations at its full installed capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
The company’s Managing Director, Mr David Bird, confirmed that the facility has successfully brought its core processing units to stable peak output. These include the crude distillation unit and the petrol production section, both of which have now been fully integrated and optimised.

According to the company, the refinery has entered a 72 hour performance test phase in collaboration with its technology partners to validate operational stability at sustained maximum throughput. The exercise is expected to confirm efficiency levels and product quality consistency.
Bird stated that the transition to full capacity reflects months of technical adjustments and systems calibration. He noted that the refinery’s engineering teams focused on ensuring reliable output while meeting required product specifications.
With the plant now operating at design capacity, the refinery is positioned to supply up to 75 million litres of petrol daily to the domestic market. Industry analysts say this could significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products and ease pressure on foreign exchange demand.
The development comes at a time when the Federal Government is seeking to strengthen local refining capacity and stabilise fuel supply across the country. For decades, Nigeria exported crude oil while relying heavily on imported refined fuel due to limited domestic processing infrastructure.
The Dangote facility, regarded as one of the largest single train refineries in the world, is expected to play a central role in reshaping Nigeria’s energy landscape by increasing local production, supporting supply stability and improving energy security.
