The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a national cybersecurity coordination council to strengthen Nigeria’s response to growing digital threats.

The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy said the proposed council would serve as a multi-stakeholder platform for coordination, information sharing, and collaboration across public and private sector institutions.
The ministry said the move was driven by the need to respond more effectively to increasingly complex cyber threats affecting critical institutions, businesses, and citizens.
According to the ministry, the council will operate as a non-statutory body and bring together chief information security officers, cybersecurity experts, technology firms, law enforcement agencies, and relevant government institutions.
It said the platform is expected to deepen cooperation among key stakeholders, improve trusted intelligence sharing, and support a more coordinated national response to cyber incidents.
The ministry also said the council would provide advisory support to the Federal Government on strategies, frameworks, and actions needed to improve Nigeria’s cyber resilience.
As part of the process, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has directed the National Information Technology Development Agency, the Nigerian Communications Commission, Galaxy Backbone Limited, and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission to establish a technical coordination secretariat.
The secretariat will be based at NITDA and will operate under the strategic coordination of the minister’s office.
The ministry said a national cybersecurity industry roundtable will be held in April 2026 to begin consultations and help shape the framework for the proposed council.
Tijani said cybersecurity remains a shared national responsibility and stressed the need for stronger partnerships, trusted collaboration, and sustained vigilance across government, industry, and civil society.
He said closer cooperation would improve Nigeria’s capacity to detect threats early, respond more effectively, and build a more resilient digital economy.
