Akwa Ibom COVID-19 Public Health Alert

The Akwa Ibom State Government has raised concern over the growing circulation of false reports, misleading claims and fabricated online publications targeting Governor Umo Eno, the State Government and its development programmes.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the government condemned what it described as deliberate attempts by individuals and groups to mislead the public, damage the reputation of the administration and create distrust around government projects, policies and activities.

The government stated that while it respects the constitutional right of citizens to freedom of expression, the right must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law.

It noted that freedom of expression should not be used as a cover for publishing defamatory materials, spreading unverified allegations or deliberately circulating false information.

According to the statement, the administration of Governor Umo Eno remains open to constructive criticism, informed public debate and responsible engagement from citizens and stakeholders.

The government added that accountability, transparency and fairness remain central to its relationship with the people of Akwa Ibom State.

It, however, warned that fabricated stories, coordinated misinformation and the reckless publication of unverified claims would no longer be treated with levity.

Publishers, bloggers, social media influencers, content creators, online platforms, organisations and individuals were advised to stop originating, circulating or amplifying false and malicious information.

The government said it would not hesitate to initiate appropriate legal action against any person or organisation found to have published information capable of damaging reputations, misleading the public or undermining confidence in the administration.

It stressed that such actions would be taken through the relevant legal processes and in accordance with the laws of Akwa Ibom State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Members of the public were also advised to verify information and rely on official government channels for updates on policies, projects, programmes and other government activities.

Citizens were urged to disregard anonymous, sensational and unsubstantiated reports designed to create confusion, fear or unnecessary tension.

The government further called on journalists, media organisations and other stakeholders in the information sector to uphold professional ethics by ensuring that reports are factual, balanced, properly verified and guided by public interest.

It reaffirmed its commitment to the implementation of the ARISE Agenda, adding that campaigns of falsehood, malicious propaganda and misinformation would not distract the administration from its development priorities.

The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah.
