Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, is scheduled to deliver the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th combined convocation lecture of Akwa Ibom State University today, Thursday, April 23, 2026.
A release signed by the Registrar of the university, Dr Ebi Eno Ibanga, said the lecture, titled The Nigerian University System and National Defense in the 21st Century, will hold at the Senate Chamber of the university’s Ikot Akpaden campus in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
The event is expected to begin at 2pm, while guests are to be seated by 1.45pm.
According to the university, the lecture will provide a platform for intellectual engagement on the role of academia in national defence and policy formulation in the 21st century.
Musa, a retired general, has played a prominent role in Nigeria’s security architecture over the years. He began his military career at the Nigerian Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Infantry Corps.
He later served in several command, staff and instructional roles within and outside Nigeria, including peacekeeping assignments and counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.
He was appointed Chief of Defence Staff in June 2023 and, in December 2025, became Minister of Defence.
His appearance at the convocation lecture is expected to draw attention to the relationship between the university system, national security and public policy at a time of evolving security challenges in Nigeria.
