Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he will support whoever emerges as the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, in a move seen as a call for party unity and a credible primary process.
Atiku made the position known through his representative, Prof Ola Olateju, at a reception in Lagos for defectors from political parties including the ADC and Labour Party.
He said the party’s presidential primary must be free, fair and open to all aspirants, adding that no candidate should be imposed on members. He said only a transparent contest would produce a flagbearer capable of commanding broad public support.
The declaration comes amid growing opposition consultations and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 election. The ADC primary is expected to be a major test of the party’s internal cohesion as leading opposition figures weigh their options.
Atiku’s position is likely to fuel further debate over possible alignments within the opposition, especially as parties seek a stronger platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Political observers say the pledge could help calm tensions among supporters of various aspirants by projecting a message of inclusiveness and collective purpose.
In the wider context, the statement reflects continuing efforts by opposition leaders to build consensus early and avoid divisions that could weaken their chances in the next presidential race.
