The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the announcement of an immediate ceasefire involving Iran, the United States and their respective allies, describing the move as an important step towards de-escalation and peace.
In a press release issued on 8 April 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the African Union Commission said the development aligns with its long-standing call for restraint and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
Youssouf also commended the roles played by key mediators, including Oman, Türkiye and Egypt, whose diplomatic efforts, according to the Commission, helped secure the ceasefire arrangement.
The AU Chairperson noted that the conflict had far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate parties, including across Africa, where fuel supply disruptions have contributed to inflation and pushed up the cost of basic goods.
He said the ceasefire creates an opportunity to reduce the suffering of populations affected directly and indirectly by the crisis, while stressing that sustained dialogue and inclusive diplomacy would be necessary to preserve the gains made.
The Commission further expressed support for the Islamabad Talks and urged all parties to maintain momentum towards a durable and comprehensive peace.
Youssouf reiterated that diplomacy and dialogue, in line with the Charter of the United Nations, remain the only viable path to resolving international crises.
