The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced a nationwide revalidation exercise for the national register of voters, beginning on April 13, 2026.

According to the commission, the exercise is aimed at revising the register to remove null and ineligible entries, including deceased persons, non-Nigerians, underage registrants, and cases of multiple registration, in line with the law.
INEC said the exercise is not a fresh registration. It is meant for persons who registered between 2011 and 2024.
The commission stated that the exercise will run in phases across local government areas, registration areas, and polling units. It will start at local government areas from April 13 to May 2 for 20 days. This will be followed by revalidation at registration areas from May 5 to May 11 for seven days.
INEC said the process will then move to polling units from May 13 to May 19 for another seven days before returning to local government areas from May 20 to May 29 for 10 days.
The exercise will hold daily from 9:00am to 3:00pm, including weekends and public holidays.
The commission said eligible voters can complete the process online or physically at designated centres.
For online revalidation, INEC directed voters to visit its portal and create an account. Voters are expected to provide their Voter Identification Number or personal details, after which the system will carry out biometric verification using facial image technology. The commission said the submitted information will be checked against the central voter database to confirm identity before revalidation is completed. A slip will then be generated and a notification message sent to the voter after successful revalidation.
For physical revalidation, INEC said voters should visit a designated centre and provide their Voter Identification Number or personal details. It said officials will conduct biometric verification using facial image checks, while the information provided will be matched with the central voter database. The commission added that any information requiring correction can be updated during the process. A printout will be issued to the voter at the end of the exercise, while a message may also be sent through email or phone number where available.
INEC said the revalidation is part of its efforts to revise, update, and clean the national register of voters, and to strengthen its integrity, accuracy, inclusivity, and credibility ahead of future elections.
