The Nigeria Revenue Service, NRS, in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board, JRB, has announced the implementation of the Taxpayer Identification, known as Tax ID, for all taxable persons in Nigeria.
The notice, dated May 18, 2026, said the implementation follows Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandates every taxable person in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID.
According to the notice, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen tax administration, improve transparency and enhance service delivery across the country’s tax system.
The Tax ID will serve as a single and unified identity for taxpayers. It is expected to support seamless interaction with tax authorities at federal and sub-national levels.
The NRS and JRB said the system would consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication and improve the management of tax-related information.
The agencies listed the key benefits of the Tax ID to include a single tax identity for all tax transactions, simplified compliance, improved transparency, enhanced revenue assurance and harmonisation of taxpayer data across all tiers of government.
They also said the new Tax ID system would replace the existing TIN Validation API currently used by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, financial institutions and other organisations.
Organisations requiring integration or validation services for Tax ID for individuals, enterprises and business names were advised to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB through [email protected].
For Tax ID services relating to corporate entities, the notice directed organisations to contact the Tax Automation Department of the NRS through [email protected] for access to the Tax ID API and related integration guidelines.
The notice was signed by the management of the Nigeria Revenue Service and the Joint Revenue Board.
