The Federal Executive Council has approved the introduction of an alphanumeric digital postcode system for Nigeria, a policy aimed at modernising the country’s addressing structure and strengthening digital infrastructure nationwide.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, who said the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s strategic effort to strengthen the foundations of Nigeria’s digital economy.
According to the minister, the new postcode framework will operate through a Geographic Information System driven platform designed to improve location accuracy and standardise addressing across the country. The project is being developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service under the leadership of the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer, Tola Odeyemi.
Officials say the digital postcode system will create a more reliable national addressing structure that supports faster sorting and delivery of letters and parcels. The improved framework is expected to strengthen the operational efficiency of postal services and reduce the long standing challenges associated with inconsistent or incomplete addresses.
Beyond postal operations, the system is expected to support national planning and improve several aspects of public service delivery. Authorities note that emergency response agencies will benefit from more precise location data, while logistics operators and electronic commerce platforms will gain from improved address verification and delivery efficiency.
Government officials also believe the platform will assist public institutions in delivering services more effectively by providing clearer geographic references for communities, businesses and infrastructure across the federation.
The minister explained that foundational digital systems such as a modern addressing framework are critical to building an inclusive digital economy. He added that the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to creating the infrastructure required to connect people, businesses and services more efficiently across Nigeria.
With the country’s digital economy expanding steadily, authorities say the introduction of a national digital postcode system represents an important step in improving coordination, connectivity and service delivery across both public and private sectors.
