The Akwa Ibom State Government has activated heightened public health surveillance following confirmed reports of a COVID-19 outbreak in a neighbouring state.

The government said the measure became necessary because of close geographic, social and economic interactions between Akwa Ibom and surrounding states.
In a statement issued on Sunday, April 26, 2026, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem Emmanuel John, and the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, Ph.D., said Governor Umo Eno had directed the Ministry of Health to intensify surveillance across entry points, health facilities and communities.
The statement said the governor gave the directive after receiving a briefing from the Ministry of Health on the situation.
According to the government, disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams have been placed on alert to ensure prompt detection and management of any suspected case.
The state government urged residents to remain vigilant and observe basic preventive measures, including regular handwashing with soap and water, use of alcohol-based sanitisers, wearing of face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, and avoiding close contact with persons showing symptoms.
Residents were also advised to avoid handshakes and physical greetings, and to seek prompt medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough or difficulty in breathing.
The government also reminded healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion and comply strictly with infection prevention and control protocols.
The statement added that Governor Eno had directed the Ministry of Health to strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, and other relevant partners to ensure effective monitoring and coordinated response.
The government reassured residents that it remained committed to safeguarding public health across the state.
It also urged members of the public to rely only on verified information from the Ministry of Health and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports capable of causing unnecessary panic.
The Ministry of Health has set up an enquiry desk to assist members of the public.
For enquiries, residents may contact the Director of Public Health, Dr Bassey Akpan, on 08035321513, or the State Epidemiologist, Dr Nchiek Edet Eneh, on 08038722244.
