The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has postponed the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.
The decision was reached on Friday, April 10, 2026, at a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, where the planned exercise was among the issues considered.
INEC said the voter revalidation exercise remains an important part of its constitutional responsibility to maintain a credible and updated National Register of Voters. According to the Commission, the exercise is intended to verify and review existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, remove duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the integrity of the voter register.
The Commission added that the exercise would also give registered voters the opportunity to confirm their details and make necessary corrections where required.
INEC, however, said the exercise will now take place after the 2027 general elections.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to the conduct of free, fair, credible and inclusive elections.
The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
