The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disowned a viral X account recently attributed to its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, describing it as fake and part of a malicious campaign aimed at undermining his neutrality.
In a statement, the commission said Prof. Amupitan does not own or operate any personal account on X, formerly Twitter, and has never used the platform to make partisan comments or align himself with any political interest. INEC said the posts being circulated in his name were fabricated and should be disregarded.
The electoral body said the false claims formed part of what it described as a coordinated smear campaign. It urged Nigerians to rely only on official INEC communication channels for verified information concerning the commission and its leadership.
The controversy followed online claims suggesting that the INEC chairman had made partisan remarks through the account. The allegation drew public attention because of the commission’s central role in safeguarding electoral credibility and public trust.
By distancing its chairman from the account, INEC sought to protect confidence in its independence and to make clear that attempts to drag its leadership into political controversy through false digital identities would not stand.
